Board of Health Defers Vote on Septic Rule
Board of Health · Meeting of September 11, 2026
Granby Board of Health spends an hour debating whether to keep its extra 110-gallon septic rule as accessory dwelling units complicate the math. Chairman Bill calculated the add-on raises construction costs by roughly 12 percent but called it worthwhile, saying it "buys you the potential of an added bedroom in the future." Member Peter La Barbara countered that "everybody's barking up the wrong tree with this leach-field design-flow business," arguing shared septic tanks pose a bigger risk than added flow. No vote was taken; the board will draft revised language distinguishing "facility" from "dwelling unit" for a future session.
Elsewhere, the board approved six food and farm permits, including one for Naomi Simonic's Deer Creek Farm coffee trailer, accepted a complaint on a 152 Amherst Street septic system that lasted 55 years before failing, and approved a $10,000 sand-fill redesign at 107 Cold Hill Road after an unforeseen ledge was found during excavation.
