School Committee · Meeting of August 4, 2026
Granby School Committee approved revamped student handbooks, replacing much of the high school's tardiness punishment with community service hours. Principal Jordan said the shift to five hours of community service per five tardies, scaling to Saturday school and eventually a one-day in-house suspension at 25-plus tardies, followed parent complaints about a prior Saturday-school pilot, calling the earlier approach's results "working" but "awful" for families. One committee member pushed back on in-house suspension, saying "I don't like what that says to other students about that student," while another argued "life has consequences." Superintendent Mary Jane Rickson reported state rural aid rising to $20 million from $12 million and a roughly $53,000 Circuit Breaker budget boost.
The committee also accepted an anonymous-amount lacrosse-team donation and renewed a maintenance-director stipend MOU for a third year.
