Granby Town Meeting Approves $485,000 in Equipment, Infrastructure, and Capital Spending

GRANBY — May 11, 2026 — Granby town meeting approves more than $485,000 in borrowing and spending across 19 articles at the first session of its annual meeting. Select Board Chairman Mark Bale opened the May 11 session with a disclosure that the town came "very close to some sort of state takeover" after its books went unreconciled from last June through January, with state school funding withheld until the books were closed; he credited Acting Town Administrator Kevin O'Grady, former Town Administrator Chris Martin, and Treasurer Steve Nally with stabilizing the situation. Borrowing approvals included $60,000 for a new fire department UTV, $60,000 for 16 fire department radios, $110,559 for a complete LED lighting overhaul at the Granby Free Public Library — projected to cut energy use 72 percent — and $40,000 for a pavilion at the Veterans Memorial Park, where volunteers have already raised and spent $170,000 over 14 years. The meeting also passed, by majority, a non-binding resolution supporting the state advisory commission redesigning the Massachusetts flag and seal, joining 85 other towns statewide. The operating budget is scheduled for the session's second half on June 8.
