GRANBY --
HIGH SCHOOL -- At its Oct. 6 meeting, the School Committee congratulated S. Rodriguez for earning her 100th ace in girls volleyball. The committee also previewed the Booster Club's community night, set for Tuesday, Oct. 13, after the event was moved from its original date due to a forecasted Nor'easter. The night will feature girls JV soccer at 4:30 p.m., boys varsity at 5 p.m. and girls varsity at 7 p.m., played under the lights with lighting donated by Northeast Paving and the night sponsored by the Booster Club. The senior class plans to sell raffle calendar fundraisers, the junior class will sell beanies, and the Booster Club's Snack Shack will be open; the art club may offer face painting if a volunteer is available.
Separately, new special education teacher Mr. Albano presented a proposal to start a free Student Baseball and Softball Officiating Club for students in grades 7 through 12. The club would teach rules, mechanics, positioning, communication and decision-making skills but would not certify students with any outside organization. Albano disclosed his volunteer role as a board member and umpire-in-chief for the Belchertown Little League, saying the club would operate with no formal partnership, funding, data-sharing or placement arrangement with that organization. He withdrew an initial request for an advisor stipend after confirming none is available under the Unit A contract, and offered to advise the club without compensation. The committee did not vote on the proposal; it is expected to move to district and council review for policy and ethics guidance before any launch.
